Background
The Advanced Nursing Foundation (ANF) seeks an experienced, visionary leader to fill the position of Dean of the Indian Institute of Advanced Nursing (IIAN) in HIV/AIDS in Chennai, India. ANF was established in 2008 to establish and manage educational institutions in the field of nursing, to implement strategies aimed at creating higher standards of nursing education and to address nursing workforce capacity building efforts throughout India. IIAN will be the first centre of excellence in nursing education established by the Foundation. Located in Chennai, IIAN will provide post-graduate nursing courses specializing in HIV/AIDS prevention, diagnosis and treatment to nearly 300 students annually. IIAN is being developed as a unique public-private partnership between the Government of India, Indian Nursing Council, Clinton Health Access Initiative, private sector stakeholders and international nursing specialists at the Yale University School of Nursing, USA and will serve as a national and international hub for nurse training, education and research in HIV/AIDS.
Position Summary
The IIAN Dean will work directly with the ANF Board of Directors, Academic Advisory Committee, and Administrative Officer to develop, implement and maintain the Institute’s academic, admissions and student life infrastructure. As IIAN will accept its first students in 2011, the Dean will contribute actively to setting up the academic infrastructure of the Institute, including the hiring of faculty and staff as well as establishment of initial academic and student life policies, under the guidance of the ANF Academic Advisory Committee and with the support of the Administrative Officer. In addition, the Dean is responsible for ensuring the highest academic quality and for facilitating institutional capacity-building in nursing education and training and working towards enhanced roles for nurses in HIV/AIDS care. The Dean will play a key role in supporting the development of IIAN’s curriculum along with Yale School of Nursing and the IIAN Curriculum Advisory Committee.
Responsibilities
• Along with the ANF Curriculum Advisory Committee and Yale University School of Nursing faculty, participate in the development, revision, maintenance and implementation of IIAN’s state-of-the-art HIV/AIDS training curricula for all post-graduate nursing courses (Diploma, MSc, etc.) offered at IIAN;
• Oversee, monitor and ensure the quality and content of instruction within all courses offered at the Institute; train and evaluate teaching faculty;
• Work closely with the IIAN Executive Director and Administrative Officer to develop annual staffing, enrolment and academic and research strategies that harmonise with the Institute’s overall administrative and financial capacity;
• Develop and monitor local institutional partnerships aimed at providing IIAN students with state-of-the-art clinical training experience and research opportunities; facilitate and maintain effective working relationships with academic partners and institutions nationally and internationally to encourage cooperation, joint research opportunities, and identify best practices in nursing training;
• Work with key faculty members, IIAN Executive Director, IIAN Administrative Officer and ANF Governing Board to develop, support and sustain a world-class program of nursing research at IIAN;
• Coordinate accreditation visits, IIAN Academic Committee meetings, and adjunct instructor orientation and training;
• Ensure IIAN’s compliance with Indian Nursing Council guidelines and other national academic accreditation standards;
• Establish and promote high academic and behavioural standards and expectations for all students and staff; communicate clearly with the student body, faculty and staff and academic partners;
• Act as a member of the IIAN faculty with teaching and research responsibilities as such;
• Provide effective management and supervision of student life, including clear policies and procedures for extracurricular activities and disciplinary systems;
Qualifications
Required
- Doctoral degree in nursing with 10 years of clinical experience and at least 5 years experience in administration within nursing higher education, including teaching and research experience at a senior level, and a strong publication record.
- Fluency in spoken and written English;
- Ability and willingness to undertake travel as needed.
Desirable
- Record of effective, innovative leadership in nursing practice, education and training;
- Experience of working or studying within an international setting;
- Strong track record of successful resource mobilisation.

The selection would be made by the ANF Academic Committee on the basis of the recommendations of a Search and Selection Committee. Salary and compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The Dean will be appointed for a period of 3 years, with a possibility of re-appointment based on annual performance assessments conducted by the Academic Committee.
