PSI seeks entrepreneurial, dynamic candidates with an interest in private sector approaches to development for the position of Country Representative for Botswana. PSI/Botswana’s activities focus primarily on HIV/AIDS, in light of the burden of disease in Botswana, where one in four adults is HIV-positive. PSI/Botswana is one of the largest and best established organizations in the country, and so has a leading place in working at both the policy and implementation levels with the Government of Botswana on a range of strategically important initiatives around topics such as male circumcision, multiple concurrent partnerships, and condom use. With funding from international and local donors (including the Government of Botswana), PSI/Botswana distributes HIV/AIDS prevention products and conducts behavior change communications campaign nationwide.
The Country Representative is based in Gaborone, Botswana, and reports to the Regional Director in Washington, D.C. PSI is highly decentralized, requiring considerable autonomy and initiative from its Country Representatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Country Representative will be responsible for the overall development, management (financial, administrative, and programmatic), and representation of PSI’s activities in Botswana. This includes, but is not limited to:
• External relations with donor, government, NGO, and commercial entities;
• Fundraising for existing and new activities;
• Leadership of the senior management team;
• Strategic plan implementation;
• Oversight of the development of annual operational, marketing, and research plans;
• Management of program budget and oversight of internal controls and accountability mechanisms;
• In-country personnel recruitment, training/mentorship, and supervision;
• Program development, including further innovation within existing program areas and expansion into new areas;
• Management of the local Board of Directors;
• Financial and other reporting as required by donors and PSI/Washington.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Significant general management experience, with a technical background in HIV/AIDS, public health, external relations, or marketing a plus,
• At least five years work experience in a developing country;
• Relevant post-graduate degree (MBA, MIA, MPH, etc.) or equivalent experience;
• Demonstrated strengths in strategic organizational leadership and external relations;
• Experience working constructively with international donors and national governments;
• Knowledge of international development and health issues;
• Demonstrated ability to attract, motivate, and build the capacity of staff;
• Fluency in English.
The successful candidate will be a creative, innovative and strategic thinker, and will have: excellent communication, analytical, organizational, diplomatic, interpersonal and cross-cultural skills; a commitment to evidence-based decision-making; a strong interest in private sector approaches to development; and a proven ability to produce results. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated fundraising ability, a strong track record of having worked successfully with national governments, and experience in HIV/AIDS.
