Ad Campaign Discourages Homophobia
In an effort to convince people to quit being jerky to others, a recent ad campaign replaces popular slang invective "G*y" with other descriptive, insulting phrases. As you can see above, one reads: "That's so gamer guy who has more videogames than friends." Do you get it? Good.
Whether the ads are effective or not, they make a good point: You really shouldn't use the G-word to describe everything you don't like. It bothers people who are gay, and you shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings, like your mom taught you. I know you don't mean homosexual necessarily when you say something is "G*y," but it still isn't cool.
As a public service to the entire internets, we at G4 thought it would be constructive to come up with a replacement word or phrase for people to call things they disapprove of. Something that means essentially the same thing, but isn't insulting to any particular group. "That's so lame!" is out, because there are people with handicaps who might not like it. I like "That's bunk!" or "That's hokum!" but those sound old-timey. We tried "That's so rotted," and "That's so Raven!" but while both have a certain appeal, they don't really capture the essence we were looking for.
... and that's it. That's the best we could do. We really tried, too. Perhaps you could help us start our revolution in tolerance in our comment section and finish the phrase "That's so...." with a word or phrase that conveys the same feeling and emotions as the G-word.
In the meantime, please enjoy this video of ancient hippies Peter, Paul and Mary urging you to quit laughing at people.
