Throughout Africa and many other developing regions of the world, inefficient, poorly equipped or maintained, and inadequately staffed medical laboratories represent a major barrier to the
provision of high quality healthcare services. The World Health Organization's Regional Office for Africa (WHO/AFRO) reports that most laboratories on that continent lack the institutional, material, and human resource capacity required to achieve WHO accreditation and operate as an effective component of healthcare systems in these nations.

WASHINGTON, DC, and PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, September 17, 2009 - The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) is deeply saddened to announce the loss of one of our partners, award-winning Zambian recording artist Lily Tembo, known to her fans as "Lily T." Tembo, 27, died on the evening of September 14 near her home in Lusaka as a result of severe gastritis and anemia. Her funeral was held today in Zambia.

Washington, DC, July 9, 2009 - HIV/AIDS Twinning Center partners at the Universidade Católica de Moçambique (UCM) and the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania celebrated the opening of a new HIV/AIDS clinic and training center. St. Luke's Health Center officially opened its doors at UCM's Beira campus on June 17, greatly expanding accessibility to high quality primary care and HIV/AIDS services to people in Mozambique's Sofala Province.

Twinning Center Launches New Partnership to Strengthen Emergency Medical Services in Ethiopia
Program will build capacity to provide urgent care and related education and training at Addis Ababa University Faculty of Medicine at Black Lion Hospital
WASHINGTON, DC, July 7, 2009 - The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) has established a new partnership through its HIV/AIDS Twinning Center Program that will support the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) by building critical institutional and human resource capacity in the field of emergency medicine. Established with support from CDC/Ethiopia and in close cooperation with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, this partnership is the Twinning Center's seventh in the country.

AIHA and the HIV/AIDS Twinning Center have extended the deadline for submission of proposals in response to the above-captioned solicitation announcement, which was issued March 3, 2009.
The new deadline is April 15, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
Consequently, the new expected notification date is May 12, 2009.

Twinning Center Launches Partnership to Build Social Work Training Capacity, Improve OVC Care in Nigeria New program will help support orphans and vulnerable children by training social workers and allied caregivers in Nigeria's Enugu State WASHINGTON, DC, September 19, 2006 * The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) has established a new partnership through its HIV/AIDS Twinning Center Program that will support the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) by training social workers and para-professionals to provide much-needed care and support to Nigerian children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in the West African nation's Enugu State. Hunter College School of Social Work in New York City is partnering with the Federal School of Social Work in the city of Enugu and the Department of Social Works and Sociology at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka. Together, partners will work to strengthen the capacity of both Nigerian institutions to provide in-service and pre-service training in social work, case management, leadership, and other skills necessary to ensure comprehensive services are available to children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Enugu State. This partnership is the Twinning Center's first in Nigeria, and was established with support from PEPFAR and CDC/Nigeria in close cooperation with Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Women's Affairs and Social Development. Hunter College School of Social Work will draw on its more than 50 years of experience training social workers and para-social workers, tapping into a broad and varied network of local service delivery and professional organizations, including the New York City Administration for Children's Services, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Association of Black Social Workers, the Nigerian Social Workers Association, and Howard University School of Social Work in Washington, DC. Partners from Hunter College and the US-based Nigerian Social Workers Association will travel to Nigeria September 22-26, where they will meet with their counterparts, conduct an initial situational and needs assessment at both Nigerian institutions, visit local OVC and AIDS service organizations, and began to jointly develop a plan that will guide their capacity-building efforts.
